What advise would you give to the current Aggies interested in entering environmental industry?
Find an experienced mentor that will share both technical and institutional knowledge and give you candid feedback on your performance. Be coachable, consistent, and learn how to communicate effectively. Also, learn your industry or entity’s culture, purpose, and business processes/systems. Most importantly, learn its people, what they’re good at, and be assertive in learning from them based on your interests.
If you were entering the environmental industry today, what area would you pursue? Why?
I’d pursue an EH&S or Sustainability role with a large Oil & Gas or Technology company. It’s a path that grants access to resources that will allow you to gain and refine skills that are applicable to a broad spectrum of the global economy. You’ll also learn how a business works; combined with technical knowledge that could allow you to pursue starting a business or consulting service.
