We are pleased to announce that Lauren Lindley and Steven Roland each received a scholarship from the C.R. Butler and B.J. Butler Endowed Scholarship in the Plant Pathology & Microbiology Department. Lauren and Steven are both seniors in BESC.
Welcome Dr. Leland (Sandy) Pierson who has accepted the Department Head position in the Department of Plant Pathology & Microbiology effective September 1, 2009. Dr. Pierson has been with the Department of Plant Science at the University of Arizona since 1990, during that time he served as a major adviser or committee member for 44 graduate students. He has also chaired the University of Arizona Institutional Biosafety Committee for nine years. For the past year, he served as the department’s associate head. He researches microbial secondary metabolite gene regulation, microbial community interactions, biofilms, and biological control. Pierson earned a bachelor’s degree in microbiology from the University of California-Davis and a doctorate in microbiology from Washington State University. His wife, Elizabeth, also will be joining the college faculty in the Department of Horticultural Science.
- Congratulations to Dr. Herman Scholthof who was named 2009 American Phytopathological Society Fellow. Dr. Scholthof, who also has an appointment with Texas AgriLife Research, will receive the honor during the society’s annual meeting Aug. 4 in Portland, Oregon.
- Congratulations to Dr. Brian Shaw on being a recipient of the Student-Led Awards for Teaching Excellence (SLATE) for the Spring Semester 2009. Recipients represent the top 20 percent of those who participated and awards are based on rankings from evaluations created and administered by students, with weighting for factors such as class size.
