Fungal Molecular Biology
My research interest is in fungal genetics, focusing on development and pathogenesis. A major focus of the program is functional genomic analysis of the rice blast fungus. I am a co-PI involved in a multi-institutional NSF Plant Genome Project for functional analysis of the rice-M. grisea interaction. Our role in the project is functional characterization of secreted proteins to explore their interactions with plants. The signal transduction pathways controlling pathogenesis also regulate developmental processes. Thus, a basic understanding of signal transduction has relevance for plant pathogens. Our second research area is exploring developmental processes in Neurospora crassa, a model genetic system.
Teaching
PLPA 611: Advanced Plant Pathology (3 hr). This course is required of all graduate students entering the Department and introduces students to the science of plant pathology.
PLPA 689: Advanced Plant Pathology Laboratory (1 hr). This laboratory is associated with PLPA611 and consists of laboratories that showcases many areas of plant pathology that are represented by research programs in our Department.
PLPA 625: Plant Pathogenic Fungi (3 hr with 1 hr lab). This course provides an overview of fungal biology from mycology to genomics.
