Smut Symptoms on Turf

Illustration

Smut (fungus - Ustilago cynodonis): Smut galls replace seed in the spike. The inflorescence (flower) is often distorted. Since the fungus causes a systemic infection, fungicides are not effective. Control by close mowing and proper fertilization, which keeps the grass in a vegetative growing condition, preventing seed head development.
